Upcoming Continuing Forestry Education Opportunities

There is a wide variety of ways that Licensed Foresters can obtain a sufficient amount of Continuing Forestry Education (CFE) credits to maintain a license.

For more information on CFE for a Massachusetts Forester's License:

Below is a list of some upcoming CFE opportunities.  UMass Extension provides these CFE opportunities as a service .  Credits are in category 1 unless otherwise stated.  Foresters may bring a "Continuing Forestry Education Certificate of Attendance" form to the event which can then be submitted with your license renewal application. If you are organizing an event and would like it rated for credit, contact: David Kittredge. This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it

Regeneration harvesting in a challenging environment

A silviculture workshop at the J. Maynard Miller Municipal Forest.   Basin Road, Vernon Vermont

The Vernon Town Forest is a 469 acre tract consisting of hemlock, red oak, black birch, white pine and associated species with a history of active management. It includes the outstanding old-growth black gum swamps.  Deer browse pressure and public use are high, creating potential conflicts with forest management activities.

In summer of 2009, about 80 acres were treated with a variety of harvest strategies to implement uneven aged management.  Included were large and small group selection, thinning, and various shelterwood treatments. Registration and greetings will start promptly at 8:30 with an introductory session at 9:00 and tour of recent harvesting.  We will be back to the tent about 12:30 for a catered BBQ chicken lunch.  In the afternoon, we will look at previously harvested units and the black gum swamps, returning about 3:30.  An informal discussion and beverages will follow.

Cost is $45 per person, catered BBQ chicken lunch for those who pre-register by May 16th.  We need to arrange a specific number for lunch, so if you don’t register, we won’t be able to provide lunch.  BYO bug repellent.

Checks to be made out to VFF and sent to Bruce Shields at 6405 Garfield Rd, Wolcott VT 05680.
