Comments on stumpage price surveys. 4th quarter, 2006
Soft maple, cherry, and white pine holding; mini increased spikes in red oak veneer markets; some mills screeching for stockpiling; so far this is the 5th [!] winter in a row whereby ground conditions are [still] too moist for me to want any operators on the sales I’ve marked…we’ll see what January brings.
What about a monetary award to loggers who practice TSI work along with a sawtimber sale from the state/towns or private land owners?!
We need to encourage loggers and local sawmills.
Falling log prices!
Shortage of good timber harvesters means I sell less stumpage
Oak is still down. I have been told by several mill owners that China/Russia are pumping out their beech which looks a lot like sugar maple and its hurting the sugar maple market. Red oak out of favor still. White pine picked up with winter. Hard to move a lot of volume.
These three bids were shown on the same day. While the quality of the timber varies for 3 somewhat on 3 different sites, the actual outcome in $/Mbf cannot be entirely explained by me by timing restrictions, quality, access, volume, etc.
Steady for sawlogs; fuelwood price down; too warm, firewood leftover.
Market NOT the best!
Hard way to make a living these days.
Stumpage too high, log markets too low.
Lumber markets getting worse!!
The market dropped again. Cordwood not selling; weather not cooperating.
Pine is slow -very slow. Ironically, I’m in an exceptional stand of white pine.
