What the Market Will Bear

Stumpage prices vary tremendously, depending on a wide variety of factors, such as: timber quality, distance to market, accessibility of property, sale volume, market demand, season, skid distance, landowner requirements, method of sale (e.g., competitively bid, or directly negotiated; see the article below) and logging costs. Results of a study examining the range of stumpage prices offered through a competitive bid process are presented in an article appearing in the Woodland Steward, published by the Massachusetts Forestry Association (P.O. Box 1096, Jackson Street, Belchertown, Massachusetts 01007-1096; 413 323-7326).
